Shula began his career on the field as a player with the Cleveland Browns Baltimore Colts and Washington Redskins. After his retirement in 1959 he joined the Detroit Lions in 1960 as an assistant coach and in 1963 at the age of just 33 was named head coach of the Baltimore Colts. By 1970 Shula was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins and it was with the Dolphins that he would make history.
